My story

Why I became a doula

I'm Imo, a Certified Birth and Postnatal Doula based in South East London. I support individuals and families through pregnancy, birth and the early days with their new baby, creating the space for them to find their own path into parenthood, whatever that looks like for them.

I am the eldest of four, and my fascination with birth began when I was very young, influenced by my youngest brother's home birth. I am deeply passionate about women's health, informed consent and birth rights, and I bring that passion into my work by helping families understand their options, make informed decisions and have the confidence to advocate for themselves.

My goal is to give every family the knowledge, confidence and support they need to navigate birth in a way that feels right for them, so that, whatever unfolds, they can look back on their experience feeling heard, respected and proud of the choices they made.

I do a comprehensive debrief session with my birth clients, creating time for them to reflect and gain a deeper understanding of their experience. Giving birth is a massive event, both physically and mentally, and planning the immediate hours and days after is very important. I work antenatally with families to plan for this time and discover what is most important to them in the early days with their baby.

My background

Skills I bring to my role

My career and education so far have equipped me with so many skills that I bring to my role as a doula. My background in Health Psychology, together with my training as a Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) Practitioner, has given me an understanding of the role our minds play in our health and wellbeing.

Working in clinical research within NHS hospitals, as well as in primary care, has given me a broad understanding of our healthcare system and the challenges it faces today. I draw on this experience to help families navigate their maternity care from antenatal appointments through to birth and postnatal follow-up.

As a doula, I never give medical advice, but I provide continuous emotional and practical support, by your side every step of the way.

My approach

Philosophy

My practice is non-judgemental, evidence-based, and led entirely by your choices. I'm not prescriptive about the "right" kind of birth — there isn't one. There's only the birth that's right for you.

  • Non-judgemental — your decisions are yours; my job is to support them.
  • Evidence-based — clear, balanced information so you can choose with confidence.
  • Led by your choices — never prescriptive about birth type or feeding.
  • Supportive of all feeding choices — breast, bottle, combination, whatever works for your family.
